Magnesium L-Threonate has gained significant attention in the neurodivergent community because it is the best-studied form of magnesium specifically designed to increase magnesium levels in the brain with research linking these increases to improvements in attention, sensory processing, mood regulation, and sleep.
Yet most parents struggle to find reliable guidance:
What does the science actually show?
How much is safe for children?
Which South African products are authentic?
And does the form really matter?
This article answers all of those questions with verified data, including dosing clarity, product comparisons, COA-backed authenticity checks, and a practical liquid-prep method for children who can’t swallow capsules.
1. Why Magnesium Matters for Neurodivergent Brains
Magnesium is one of the brain’s quiet regulators. It helps control over 600 cellular reactions from how neurons fire, to how muscles relax, to how we fall asleep.
For neurodivergent individuals especially those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) magnesium plays an even more critical role.
- Regulating sensory sensitivity: Low magnesium levels are linked to increased nerve excitability, which can heighten sound, touch, or light sensitivity.
- Supporting emotional balance: Magnesium influences GABA and serotonin, the calming neurotransmitters that help manage anxiety, irritability, and mood swings.
- Improving attention and focus: In ADHD studies, magnesium supplementation (especially when combined with vitamin B6) has been shown to reduce hyperactivity, restlessness, and improve attention span.
- Reducing sleep difficulties: Magnesium supports melatonin synthesis and helps the nervous system wind down before bed an issue many ND individuals struggle with.
Yet despite its importance, magnesium deficiency is surprisingly common in neurodivergent populations partly due to selective eating, gut absorption issues, and stress-related depletion.
2. Not All Magnesium Is the Same: Why the Salt Form Matters
Magnesium can’t be absorbed in its raw metallic form it must be bound to another molecule (called a “salt”) to be stable and usable by the body.
These binding molecules dramatically change how magnesium behaves once swallowed how much gets absorbed, where it travels, and how gentle it is on the gut.
Here’s a simple breakdown:
Each “salt” acts like a delivery vehicle. For example, citrate helps magnesium stay soluble in the gut (good absorption but may irritate), while glycinate uses amino-acid transporters (great for calm and sleep). But only Magnesium L-Threonate is designed to reach the brain.

3. What Makes Magnesium L-Threonate Different
Magnesium L-Threonate (often sold under the patented name Magtein®) pairs magnesium with L-threonic acid, a naturally occurring compound derived from vitamin C metabolism. This pairing changes how magnesium moves through the body.
Most magnesium salts mainly raise blood magnesium levels. Magnesium L-Threonate is unique because pre-clinical studies show it can increase magnesium inside the brain by crossing the blood–brain barrier (BBB), a tightly controlled membrane that protects the brain from most compounds.
This is critical because many neurological symptoms in ASD and ADHD including hyper-reactivity, poor focus, anxiety, and sleep disturbance involve neuronal over-excitability and impaired synaptic regulation. Raising magnesium in the brain, not just in the bloodstream, helps restore this balance.
Animal studies from the original Magtein MIT research team demonstrated that oral Magnesium L-Threonate increased cerebrospinal-fluid magnesium by 7–15% in 24 days which no other magnesium salt achieved. This led to measurable improvements in learning, memory, and synaptic density in the treated animals.
Human trials later echoed these findings where participants supplementing with magnesium L-Threonate showed improved working memory, executive function, and sleep quality compared to a placebo.
4. Why Crossing the Blood–Brain Barrier Matters
The blood–brain barrier (BBB) is both a protector and a gatekeeper. It shields the brain from toxins and pathogens, but it also blocks most nutrients from entering.
Only certain forms of magnesium those bound to small, brain-friendly molecules can cross effectively. The L-Threonate acid molecule acts as that “key.” It mimics natural vitamin C metabolites already present in the brain and cerebrospinal fluid, allowing the Magnesium L-Threonate complex to enter neural tissue where it can regulate:
- NMDA receptor activity (improving learning and memory)
- BDNF expression (supporting neuroplasticity)
- Synaptic efficiency (calming over-active neuronal firing)
For neurodivergent individuals, this means a form of magnesium that may actually influence the neurological systems tied to sensory overload, sleep regulation, and executive functioning rather than only working peripherally on muscle relaxation or digestion.
5. Understanding Magtein® and Magnesium L-Threonate
What is Magtein® ?
Magtein® is the brand name for one specific, patented version of Magnesium L-Threonate, created by scientists who discovered how to combine magnesium with L-threonic acid (a natural breakdown product of vitamin C) so that more magnesium can cross the blood–brain barrier.
The original research came from MIT and Tsinghua University in the 2000s. Those researchers later formed a company called Magceutics Inc., which licensed the raw material under the trademark Magtein®, now distributed globally by AIDP Inc.
So when you see Magtein® on a supplement label, it means:
- The magnesium L-Threonate inside was made by Magceutics/AIDP using their specific process.
- It comes with certified testing and identity verification, the same material used in the published clinical studies on memory, cognition, and brain magnesium levels.
Magtein® vs. Generic “Magnesium L-Threonate”
Chemically, both are the same molecule of Magnesium L-Threonate. The difference is traceability and proof:

So the compound is the same, but Magtein® is a traceable, validated version, you know where it came from, how it was made, and that it has the exact molecular form tested in research.
Why the Magtein® label matters?
For a parent choosing a product for her neurodivergent child, the Magtein® logo is mainly a shortcut for trust:
- It confirms the product is authentic Magnesium L-Threonate, not another magnesium salt re-labelled.
- It assures consistent purity and safety testing from batch to batch.
- It connects the product to actual scientific data on brain magnesium increases and cognitive improvements.
It doesn’t mean other products are bad it simply means Magtein® has proof on paper.
What about other brands of Generic Magnesium L-Threonate?
Some local or independent brands use Generic Magnesium L-Threonate without the Magtein® trademark.
That’s not automatically worse as long as the manufacturer can prove:
- The raw material truly is Magnesium L-Threonate (not glycinate or citrate),
- There’s a valid certificate of analysis (COA) confirming identity and purity, and
- It’s made under GMP standards with clean sourcing.
If those boxes are ticked, an unbranded, verified Generic Magnesium L-Threonate can perform just as well or even better in value and sensory tolerability. Our product review below shows the available Generic brands of Magnesium L-Threonate that meet these requirements.

The Required Dose of Magnesium L-Threonate
Magnesium L-Threonate is different from other magnesium supplements because its goal is brain absorption, not high elemental magnesium levels. That means:
- The capsule number looks high
- The actual elemental magnesium is low
- This is normal and expected
Most of the research has been done in adults, so for children we must use verified upper safety limits and not guesswork.
Medical Disclaimer - This article is for general education, not medical advice. Always speak to your paediatrician or healthcare provider before starting, stopping, or changing any supplement, especially in children or in people taking chronic medication or with existing health conditions.
What the Human Studies Actually Used (Adults Only)
Adult studies typically used:
- 1.5–2 grams/day of Magnesium L-Threonate compound
→ provides 100–200 mg of elemental Mg/day
This dose was safe for adults for short-term use in studies on memory, sleep, stress, and cognition.
What About Kids?
There are no clinical trials using Magnesium L-Threonate in autistic or ADHD children.
So the safest way to think about dosing is to:
- Stay below the official magnesium Upper Limits (ULs) for children
- Focus on elemental magnesium, not the capsule weight
- Involve a pediatrician for anything long-term or therapeutic

How Much Elemental Magnesium is in Magnesium L-Threonate?
Magnesium L-Threonate only delivers around 7-8% elemental magnesium.
A 500 mg capsule of Magnesium L-Threonate contains around 41mg of elemental magnesium.
This is why even 2–3 capsules usually remain within safe upper limits for children.
Different brands yield slightly different elemental magnesium (typically 7–10% per 500 mg capsule) depending on the exact raw material and assay results. Always check the product label where available.
Clear, Simple Guidance for Parents
The safest way to use Magnesium L-Threonate in children is:
Dose = 1 capsule (500 mg) per day for most children 4-8 years old
- Gives around 41mg elemental magnesium
- Stays below upper limits for every age group
- Is aligned with the lower end of adult study ranges
- Minimizes the risk of loose stools or stomach upset
- Provides the neuro-specific form without exceeding safety limits
If improvement is needed, older children (9–18 years) may safely increase to:
2 capsules per day (split morning + evening)
→ 83 mg elemental magnesium
→ Well below the 350 mg/day upper limit
If any dose higher than this is being considered, it must be done under the supervision of a medical doctor or pediatrician.
Do NOT exceed:
- 1 capsule (500mg)/day for ages 4–8 unless a doctor advises
- 2 capsules (1000mg)/day for ages 9–18 unless supervised clinically by a doctor
- Not recommend for children under 4 years old unless specifically guided by a pediatrician.
Neuromum Final Takeaway
For children, the safest and clearest dose of Magnesium L-Threonate is:
→ 1 capsule (500mg) per day for any child above 4 years
→ 2 capsules (1000mg) per day only for teens (9–18 years) if needed and advised by your doctor
Timing Tips
- Morning dose: supports attention, reduces restlessness, complements ADHD medication schedules.
- Evening dose: aids relaxation, sleep quality, and morning calmness.
- Avoid combining with high-calcium meals (like milk or cheese or yoghurt) within the same hour as calcium competes with magnesium absorption.

8. DIY Liquid Magnesium L-Threonate for ND Kids Who Struggle With Capsules & Powders
Many neurodivergent children can’t tolerate powders or swallow capsules, making daily supplementation stressful. Liquid Magnesium L-Threonate is extremely rare globally — and almost impossible to buy in South Africa — but the good news is that Magnesium L-threonate dissolves very easily in water.
This means you can often turn any trusted capsule into a smooth, sensory-friendly liquid without changing the chemistry just making it easier to swallow and easier to dose. “If your child has medical conditions, is on chronic medication, or has swallowing difficulties, discuss any changes with their healthcare provider first”.

What You Need
- 1 capsule Magnesium L-threonate
- 50–100 mL clean room-temperature water
- A small glass
- A spoon
-
Optional (for sensory support):
A teaspoon of juice (non-citrus) or honey
How to Make It (Step-by-Step)
1. Open the capsule
Hold it above the glass and gently twist open.
Empty all the powder into the water.
2. Stir until fully dissolved
Magnesium L-threonate dissolves quickly — usually within 20–30 seconds.
Important notes:
- Excipients like microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, rice flour, and silicon dioxide do not dissolve in water.
- This can make the mixture look cloudy, which is completely normal.
- If your child prefers a clearer liquid, you can filter the liquid after mixing through:
- Coffee filter paper
- Tea strainer
This removes insoluble excipients but does not affect the magnesium L-threonate.
3. Add optional flavour
If plain water is difficult for sensory reasons:
- Add 15–30 mL non-citrus juice, OR
- Mix in ½ teaspoon honey
4. Drink immediately
The liquid should ideally be consumed within 5–10 minutes.
Storage
- Store in the fridge for up to 12 hours only.
- Make fresh daily for best quality and sensory tolerance.
